Oligodendrocytes control potassium accumulation in white matter and seizure susceptibility

2018

Oligodendrocytes Control Potassium Accumulation in White Matter and Seizure Susceptibility.Larson VA, Mironova Y, Vanderpool KG, Waisman A, Rash JE, Agarwal A, Bergles DE. Elife. 2018 Mar 29;7. pii: e34829. doi: 10.7554/eLife.34829.The inwardly rectifying K+ channel Kir4.1 is broadly expressed by central nervous system glia and deficits in Kir4.1 lead to seizures and myelin vacuolization. However, the role of oligodendrocyte Kir4.1 channels in controlling myelination and K+ clearance in white matter has not been defined. Here, we show that selective deletion of Kir4.1 from oligodendrocyte progenitors or mature oligodendrocytes did not impair their development or disrupt the structure of mye…

Outcomes After Vascular Surgery Procedures in Patients with COVID-19 Infection: A National Multicenter Cohort Study (COVID-VAS)

2021

Objectives To analyze the outcome of vascular procedures performed in patients with COVID-19 infection during the 2020 pandemic. Methods This is a multicenter, prospective observational cohort study. We analyzed data from 75 patients with COVID-19 infection undergoing vascular surgery procedures in 17 hospitals across Spain and Andorra between March and May 2020. The primary end point was 30-day mortality. Clinical Trials registry number NCT04333693. Results The mean age was 70.9 (45–94) and 58 (77.0%) patients were male. Around 70.7% had postoperative complications, 36.0% of patients experienced respiratory failure, 22.7% acute renal failure, and 22.7% acute respiratory distress syndrome (…

Apoptosis of T cells and the control of inflammatory bowel disease: therapeutic implications.

2007

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the result of an imbalanced mucosal T cell response. Despite the identification of a genetic susceptibility region in the NOD2/CARD15 (nucleotide-binding oligomerisation domain 2/caspase recruitment domain 15) gene, the aetiology is still unclear. Thus, the hunt for disease-initiating factors such as defects in the mucosal barrier or pathogenic microorganisms is ongoing. By contrast, the immunopathogenesis in IBDs is better understood. The identification of cytokines that are involved in T cell and monocyte signalling led to specific therapeutic concepts. Recent data have clearly shown that the most powerf…
